Collective Desk #9: Rigorous Proof

June 6, 2012 in Announcements, Events

I’ll know I’ve really made my way when there are lots of boys who want to see me naked.

I’m just goofing on Rigorous Proof’s single, “Carolina,” but all silliness aside – the boys have some chops. Heavy on the reverb and peppered with distortion, it’ll be interesting to see the group’s acoustic adaptation for CDC9 this Friday at 5 p.m. at Reno Collective.

Come on down. We can have some Beer:30 action at 4:30 p.m. then listen and watch these Reno locals put on a groovtacular show for us.

Collective Desk #8: Memory Motel

May 23, 2012 in Events

I’m not sure exactly what Foltronica is, but I know it’ll be at The Reno Collective for CDC8.

If you’re as curious as I am to put a sound to the title, come on down to 522 Lander St. and check out Memory Motel. Beer:30 starts at 4:30 p.m. and the show’s at 5 p.m. so come have a visit, hang out with your bangs out, and stay for the folktronic wonderments.

Collective Desk #7: The Deadly Gallows

May 8, 2012 in Announcements

Got scurvy? Well, The Deadly Gallows just might have it too.

Whether or not you’re getting the right amount of citrus in your diet, come down to The Collective for Beer:30 and CDC #7 – with one of Reno’s own land-lubbin’ pirate bands.

Sure we’re not at sea, and yeah, they’ll be unplugged, but close your eyes and imagine you’re hoisting the mizzenmast. That’s a thing, right? The mizzenmast?

The Deadly Gallows have been rocking Reno since 2008 – like true pirates, they’re born out of recession. The quartet are forever in search of booty to plunder, so leave your treasures at home.

Don elaborates on collaborating…

May 1, 2012 in Events

If I hear “community building” one more time…

Well it sounds smooth and buttery when Don Morrison says it.

Don spoke as a featured guest for the the Reynolds School of Journalism’s #Jour4Jobs forum via Google Hangout.

One of the benefits he spoke about at the Collective?

With community and shared work comes confidence in an idea. Ideas can lead to great things, like Cloudsnap, or Don’s haircut, or even The Reno Collective.

Keep spawning ideas, and don’t be afraid to share those ideas with a friend. The process might take you somewhere.

Collective Desk #6: The Kanes

April 27, 2012 in Announcements

In a punk-rock river run dry, The Kanes just keep swimming. The Reno band boasts a home-grown punk feel with some psychedelic overtones. Come see them at the Collective Friday, April 27 at 5 p.m.–as per usual–for CDC #6 and yes, just like The Kanes, Collective Desk Concerts keep on keeping on.

If you like music, bring your ears. If you like punk rock, gel up that safety hawk and squeeze into those tight pants (Don). If you like psychedelic overtones, well, that’s just, your opinion, man.

Come down and celebrate CDC’s melodious mission to bring local bands up close and in your face. Have a beer at Beer:30 (every Friday at 4:30 p.m.) and hang out with the collective crew and the guys from The Kanes.

Afterparty TBA.

Collective Desk #5: Spike McGuire

April 11, 2012 in Collective Desk, Events

If the phrase “acoustic political post-folk punk” piques your interest then you should probably cancel your early Friday evening plans and come see Spike McGuire at Collective Desk #5. If political post-folk punk isn’t enough then maybe “raw vocal grit” or “impassioned lyrics” will draw you in. Maybe you’re excited to see a local boy perform for you. Tell you what, we’ll just see you here on on Friday, April 13th at 5 p.m., okay?

We haven’t quite figured out how a singer/songwriter that usually performs with the barebones accompaniment of an acoustic guitar will fulfill the Collective Desk mandate of a stripped-down set, but we’re excited to see the results. Someone that has shared the stage with tremendous musicians including: Chuck Ragan, Franz Nicolay, Kevin Seconds, Eddie Spaghetti, Kepi Gouhlie, and Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers is sure to please!

I have to admit, I’m still stuck on “post-folk punk”…

Collective Desk #4: Reno Video Game Orchestra

March 19, 2012 in Events

Yes, that’s right. The photo below features Duke Nukem on French horn. Only the most badass and heroic of dudes can wail on such a hardcore, contorted piece of brass.

Whether blowing up aliens or rescuing princesses is more in your wheelhouse, you’ll likely have a good time at CDC4 – featuring Reno’s first and finest Video Game Orchestra. As always, we’ll raise the proverbial curtains at 5 p.m. – doors at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23.

This crew of gamer musicians formed in August 2011 and grew into a large performance-based classical ensemble, specializing in self-arranged video game music. If it’s been a while since you’ve lodged a song from Super Mario Bros. into your skull, you should come down, have a beer, and take in the jams.

You won’t be hearing any Freebird (yay), but you just might get a wink and special serenade if you shout out, “PLAY SHADOW’S THEME FROM FINAL FANTASY SIX! YES SIX, NOT THREE BECAUSE I’M STAYING TRUE TO THE JAPANESE RELEASE LINEAGE AND NOT THE BASTARDIZED AMERICAN VERSION THAT JUMPED FROM THREE TO SEVEN!” Shout something along those lines anyway.

Yah. I’m a nerd.

Collective Desk #3: Present

March 6, 2012 in Events

Reno’s Present will grace our coworking space this Friday, March 9 at 5 p.m. The rock trio is likely to shake things up a bit, trudging their hard-rock (some might say “punk-rock”) style into our—until now—folk-dominated venue.

The guys peg themselves as a cross between the longstanding alternative (some say “college”) rock group, REM and heavy metal (some say “stoner”) rock band, Kyuss.

The trio of Tobin Jones, Nick Ramirez and Roger Rowland formed in late 2010. They’ve thrashed, smashed, screamed and sang under the smoke and strobes of several local venues throughout Reno and Sparks, and now they’re stripping down to play our intimate office space under some fluorescent lights.

Come down, and have a beer. The guys from Present might have a few themselves.

Collective Desk #2: Ditch the Pilot

February 21, 2012 in Events

CDC returns with another session of acoustic guitars, DIY percussion and vocals sans amplifiers. Reno Collective’s second installment of Collective Desk Concerts features Reno’s own Ditch the Pilot.

Come down to this free event and enjoy the indie/folk feel of a Reno band that just might blow up. With a sound comparable to Tom Petty, Wilco and Delta Spirit, Ditch the Pilot pride themselves on a style rooted in songwriting, lyricism and music played for the love of music.

If you’re the front-row-of-the-show type, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more intimate venue than a Collective Desk Concert. Come share our space with good friends, good music and hopefully a good story or two from the band.

Music starts at 5 p.m. – show up around 4:30 p.m. for Beer:30, and enjoy a cold brew while the band warms up!

Collective Desk Concerts #1: Big Remote

February 1, 2012 in Events

Let’s try something different.

Well, this is Reno Collective, so let’s continue to do things differently.

Let’s host a show. Let’s host several shows – shows by local bands in a stripped-down style at our more-than-modest venue. In the spirit of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, let’s showcase talent in a non-standard venue and open them up to the public. We’ll have a show every other week. And hey, if these little shindigs catch on, maybe we’ll go weekly.

First up: Lander Street’s own, Big Remote – featuring Reno Collective Marvel Don Morrison.

Come out and watch these guys slappa da bass. It’s free and friendly. Stay for the company. If you can’t make it, we’ll publish a few songs on our concerts page after the fun.

Hope to see you there!
