Let’s try something different.

Well, this is Reno Collective, so let’s continue to do things differently.

Let’s host a show. Let’s host several shows – shows by local bands in a stripped-down style at our more-than-modest venue. In the spirit of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, let’s showcase talent in a non-standard venue and open them up to the public. We’ll have a show every other week. And hey, if these little shindigs catch on, maybe we’ll go weekly.

First up: Lander Street’s own, Big Remote – featuring Reno Collective Marvel Don Morrison.

Come out and watch these guys slappa da bass. It’s free and friendly. Stay for the company. If you can’t make it, we’ll publish a few songs on our concerts page after the fun.

This Week at the Reno Collective: Ignite #7 & A local makerspace being planned!

Ignite Reno is Back!

Ignite Reno is this Thursday at Se7en on West from 7 to 9:30pm! We’ve been looking forward to bringing this event back, & we’ve got a great selection of speakers to kick off our 2011 season, for sure! Head to www.ignitereno.com for information and to check out past videos!

Reno Makerspace

This week we’re proud to host the planning meeting for the Reno Makerspace. Makerspaces, or hackerspaces, are like coworking communities but are more focused on creating or hacking physical products. They may be housed in a garage, a warehouse, offices or anywhere people can get together to put things together or take them apart.

Makerspaces and hackerspaces have been crucial in supporting do-it-yourself (DIY) culture in many cities, as well as increasing youth interest in applied sciences. We went to MakerFaire, an event that showcases home-made art, incredible hand-built contraptions, robots and other wonders in San Mateo a couple years ago and came back to Reno excited to see the same type of creativity and creation bustling in our city!

We learned of a couple different groups who have been working to assemble such a space here in Reno (they even collected enough money to build a Makerbot- how cool!) and jumped at the chance to have them meet here at the collective. (Last month a scheduling conflict came up on our end, but they’ve forgiven us.)

Come down tomorrow night, April 5th, starting at 6pm to meet the makers and learn about their plans, and maybe even join them in making their space a reality!

If you haven’t been to a Tweetup before, they are events set up for Twitter users to meet each other in real life and build actual social networks offline, like in the olden days! They’re a ton of fun & they’re a great way to meet the folks you trade stories with, joke with and talk to online.

Creative Buzz – March 10th

Our first Creative Buzz will on March 10th at 8am. Yes, you read that right, it’s a nice early start to your morning but we hope our offering of coffee and bagels will get you to join us for what will be a nice, creative jolt to inspire the rest of your day and even the rest of your work week.

Come join us to meet other people in the building. We will be playing a TED talk at 8:00am sharp so get there on time if you want to start off your morning right! Creative Buzz will happen every wednesday and is open to anyone in 250 Bell Street and members of the Reno Collective.

We’ve got a couple events this week that we want to keep you updated on. We encourage you to come out and be a part of what’s going on in Reno- our community is our greatest asset!

NCET’s Tech Wednesday on February 10

Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology will be hosting their monthly networking event, Tech Wednesday, here at the Collective this week!

Meet new people & mingle with the local tech and entrepreneur communities, plus check out our snazzy digs.

The event will run from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at our facility located at 250 Bell St, and tickets cost $15 in advance or $25 at the door. RSVPs are being handled via Facebook.

Lunch 2.0 at the Amendment 21 on February 11

Join us on Thursday, Feb 11th for the latest Lunch 2.0 event! Lunch 2.0 is a new way to meet other professionals outside the usual stuffy atmosphere you find at traditional “networking events,” and hopefully inspire more collaboration within the professional and tech community here in Reno.

This Lunch 2.0, hosted by Colin and me will feature some sneak peeks of upcoming technology and creativity-focuses events coming to Reno, including the Nevada Interactive Summit and Reno Collective’s weekly Creative Buzz!

As usual, don’t just sit and listen- the point to lunch 2.0 is to get everyone out of our cubicles and face to face over a great meal and great conversations.

As with Tech Wednesday, RSVPs for Lunch 2.0 are being handled by Facebook.

Valentines Vampire Crawl on February 13

As if those two events weren’t enough, the Reno Collective is a sponsor in the second annual Valentine’s Vampire Bar Crawl.

The Crawl, starting at 8pm at the Amendment 21 and consisting of 14 of Reno’s finest and most fun drinking establishments, features $2-$3 drink specials and costs only $5.

Proceeds from the crawl’s VIP party will go towards the Go Red for Women division of the American Heart Association.

Participants are encouraged to dress as vampires, vampire victims, vampire hunters, or whatever they think goes with them!

Reno Collective Launch Party Re-Cap

Thank you to everyone who everyone who braved the snow to come out to our launch party last week! We had a blast meeting new people, and mingling with those who have supported us since the beginning. There was beer, presentations and lots and lots of talking about Co-working, what the Collective is and what our plans are here in Reno.

One think in particular that we enjoyed was being able to look at our fledgling tech and entrepreneur community in person and having them meet one another. We also heard from Collective members Bryan Landaburu of Fuze and Mike Malody of the Amendment 21.
